The governance of prosthetics and orthotics services in many countries is limited. Only 30 of 197 countries have professional governing bodies for prosthetists and orthotists. A recent study also highlighted the absence of an international professional governing body for orthotics and prosthetics. While there are many governing bodies for orthotics and physiotherapy, none exists specifically for prosthetics. This lack of governance creates barriers for patients and practitioners.

To obtain a Masters of Science in prosthetics and orthotics, students should be enrolled in an accredited medical school. MSPO program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in 2012. The National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) recognized the University's Prosthetics and Orthotics program as complying with its standards.
